City Embarks on “Community Conversations” to Leverage Citizen Input in the Definition of Results

City Embarks on “Community Conversations” to Leverage Citizen Input in the Definition of Results

The City is projecting significant shortfalls for 2010-12. The information gathered during the Fall 2009 “Community Conversation on Balancing for the Future” will be used to help allocate resources to the areas the community values most.

Everyone who lives or works in Walnut Creek is encouraged to be part of this important Community Conversation.

To register for Step 1 of the "Community Conversation on Balancing for the Future," call 925-256-3505 or email community@walnut-creek.org. (More information on registration may be found at the bottom of this page).

Background:

In August, the Council identified six "Big Picture" goals that our City government is in business to achieve, based on information gathered during the General Plan process, citizen surveys and ongoing communications with citizens.

The Goals are:

Strong neighborhoods and a sense of community

Economic vitality

Effective transportation and mobility

Stewardship of the natural and built environment

A safe community

Culture, recreation and learning opportunities

Defining what these goals mean to the community, and whether some are more important than others at this time, is the mission of the Fall 2009 “Community Conversation on Balancing for the Future.”

Step 1

Participants will work in small groups focusing on a specific Goal, and describe what achieving that Goal means by answering this question: “When Walnut Creek has/does (fill in the blank) we will have (name of Goal).” E.g. “When Walnut Creek has emergency preparedness classes, we will have a Safe Community”

The answers and ideas will be gathered into themes, which define what each “Big Picture Goal” means to the unique community of Walnut Creek.

For example, “Effective transportation and mobility” in Walnut Creek might include a subgoal of being bicycle and pedestrian friendly, while in another city, it could mean having a subway system.

Before the end of each workshop all participants will have a chance to review all the answers and to add additional input as needed.

Step 1 workshops will be held at the following times:

7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21

9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29

9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10

3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 (open to Rossmoor residents only)

7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22

Step 2

Step 2 is dedicated to weighting the Goals and their subgoals to determine whether some are more important at this time than others, and will take place in November. More information on Step 2 will be available later this fall.
